Be Aware: Drug Awareness

Research conducted by Gallop Poll and Maritz Research found:

  • In 2008, 15.4 percent of 12th-graders reported using a prescription drug non-medically within the past year. This category includes amphetamines, sedatives/barbiturates, tranquilizers, and opiates other than heroin.
  • Marijuana use was reported by 10.9 percent of 8th-graders, 23.9 percent of 10th-graders, and 32.4 percent of 12th-graders.
  • By 8th grade, 52% of adolescents have consumed alcohol, 41% have smoked cigarettes, and 20% have used marijuana.
  • In 2000, more than 60% of teens said drugs were used, kept, or sold at their school.
  • The National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism estimated the total economic cost of alcohol and drug abuse to be $245.7 billion for 1992.

Research on Successful Programming?

The use of all illicit drugs and the inappropriate use of licit drugs is considered drug abuse. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), prevention science has made great progress in recent years. Many prevention interventions are being tested in “real-world” settings so they can be more easily adapted for community use. Scientists are studying a broader range of populations and topics. They have identified, for example, effective interventions with younger populations to help prevent risk behaviors before drug abuse occurs. Researchers are also studying older teens who are already using drugs to find ways to prevent further abuse or addiction. Practical issues, such as cost-benefit analyses, are being studied.

So What Does THIS Program Do?

The “Be Aware: Drug Awareness” presentation:

  • Is an effective, solution-focused, practical approach concentrating on the elimination of substance abuse risk factors.
  • Creates safer, more robust educational environments, both in the schools and the communities.
  • Educates and empowers students with a greater capacity to make better decisions via positive behavioral, social and emotional training.
